“Memories and Reflections” is a series of photographs and paintings created between 2017 and 2021.

MoniQue Michaels’ mix of styles is strikingly elemental and explores the untouched beauty of landscapes as visual narratives weaved into themes of light, water, movement and happenstance.

By creating these dreamlike realities, she hopes to encourage the viewer to begin their own creative journey and look beyond the seen into the spiritual unseen. In her art, she strives to evoke a feeling of becoming one with a multi-dimensional image, inspired by the simplistic beauty of nature.

On canvases, MoniQue layers, erases, and relayers ink, graphite, charcoal, and acrylic paint in a manner that conjures her abstract paintings as textural fields of color and poetic gestures that embrace both action and circumstance. Likewise, in her photographs, she applies the layering process by shooting multiple images on a single negative, using 120mm medium format Film.

Michaels studied with Martee Levi in Cold Spring, NY, and Frank O’Cain at the Art Students League, NY, and has a Certificate of Photography from Santa Monica College, Los Angeles. She draws inspiration from the works of Lee Krasner, Pat Steir, Mark Rothko, and Mary Corse.

As a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Manhattan, and Angeleno Magazines, MoniQue has exhibited in both solo and group shows at the MOCA/ Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Center for Fine Art Photography, Fort Collins, CO, South East Center for Photography, Greenville, SC, Phyllis Harriman Gallery, New York, and many others.

Michaels is an active member of the Greenwich Arts Council and has been an active member of the American Society of Media Photographers,
American Photographic Artists, Advertising Photographers of America, and the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles.

In addition, she served on the Board of Directors of the MOCA Contemporaries in Los Angeles from 2011 to 2013 and was a member of the Guggenheim Young Collector’s Council from 2014 to 2016.

MoniQue was born and raised in Chicago, lived and worked as an artist in Venice, CA for over a decade, and currently lives in New York.
